The Ready Readers Book Club
Hello, we are the ready readers! We love to read books ranging across genres and talk about them. This book club was formed in January 2020, and we meet up every fortnight (on Zoom) to discuss our book of the month, or our current readathon. We post all our announcements on our Instagram and Facebook group.Join our WhatsApp group and participate in some unhinged discussions!
how the club works
We have different BOTMs and readathons happening at all times. We usually shuffle between having a book of the month or a readathon every monthWe meet up every fortnight on Zoom and talk about books and our frustrations in general. In 2021, we hosted an year long readathon of Salman Rushdie's work, called 'Our Rushdie Affair'. In this readathon we've been picking up different books by the award winning author throughout 2021.In 2022, we did an year-long readathon where we challenge ourselves to read translated books every month. In 2024, we are doing an year-long reading of War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy where we are (trying to) read one chapter a day.PSA: You DON'T need to read the books (or languages) that we announce as part of our readathons! The main objective of our book club is to read books and to talk about them. If you enjoy reading and would like to meet like-minded people, join us!

What Lies Between Us (1 June - 30 June 2024)
'They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price. But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way—even if it kills her.Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.'
The Housemaid (1 June - 30 June 2024)
Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.They don’t know what I’m capable of…
War and Peace (1 January - 31 December 2024)
"In Russia's struggle with Napoleon, Tolstoy saw a tragedy that involved all mankind.War and Peace broadly focuses on Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812 and follows three of the most well-known characters in literature: Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who is fighting for his inheritance and yearning for spiritual fulfillment; Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who leaves his family behind to fight in the war against Napoleon; and Natasha Rostov, the beautiful young daughter of a nobleman who intrigues both men.As Napoleon’s army invades, Tolstoy brilliantly follows characters from diverse backgrounds—peasants and nobility, civilians and soldiers—as they struggle with the problems unique to their era, their history, and their culture. And as the novel progresses, these characters transcend their specificity, becoming some of the most moving—and human—figures in world literature."
