We have different BOTMs and readathons happening at all times. We usually shuffle between having a book of the month or a readathon every monthWe meet up every fortnight on Zoom and talk about books and our frustrations in general. In 2021, we hosted an year long readathon of Salman Rushdie's work, called 'Our Rushdie Affair'. In this readathon we've been picking up different books by the award winning author throughout 2021.In 2022, we did an year-long readathon where we challenge ourselves to read translated books every month. In 2024, we are doing an year-long reading of War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy where we are (trying to) read one chapter a day.PSA: You DON'T need to read the books (or languages) that we announce as part of our readathons! The main objective of our book club is to read books and to talk about them. If you enjoy reading and would like to meet like-minded people, join us!
July
The Ministry Of Time (1 July - 31 July 2024)
A BOY MEETS A GIRL. THE PAST MEETS THE FUTURE. A FINGER MEETS A TRIGGER. THE BEGINNING MEETS THE END. ENGLAND IS FOREVER. ENGLAND MUST FALL.In the near future, a disaffected civil servant is offered a lucrative job in a mysterious new government ministry gathering 'expats' from across history to test the limits of time-travel.Her role is to work as a 'bridge': living with, assisting and monitoring the expat known as '1847' - Commander Graham Gore. As far as history is concerned, Commander Gore died on Sir John Franklin's doomed expedition to the Arctic, so he's a little disoriented to find himself alive and surrounded by outlandish concepts such as 'washing machine', 'Spotify' and 'the collapse of the British Empire'. With an appetite for discovery and a seven-a-day cigarette habit, he soon adjusts; and during a long, sultry summer he and his bridge move from awkwardness to genuine friendship, to something more. But as the true shape of the project that brought them together begins to emerge, Gore and the bridge are forced to confront their past choices and imagined futures. Can love triumph over the structures and histories that have shaped them? And how do you defy history when history is living in your house?
War and Peace (1 January - 31 December 2024)
"In Russia's struggle with Napoleon, Tolstoy saw a tragedy that involved all mankind.War and Peace broadly focuses on Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812 and follows three of the most well-known characters in literature: Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who is fighting for his inheritance and yearning for spiritual fulfillment; Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who leaves his family behind to fight in the war against Napoleon; and Natasha Rostov, the beautiful young daughter of a nobleman who intrigues both men.As Napoleon’s army invades, Tolstoy brilliantly follows characters from diverse backgrounds—peasants and nobility, civilians and soldiers—as they struggle with the problems unique to their era, their history, and their culture. And as the novel progresses, these characters transcend their specificity, becoming some of the most moving—and human—figures in world literature."
